As the legislative session draws to a close, Republican lawmakers are overwhelmingly supporting Phil Scott for Governor. 54 of 59 sitting Republicans announced today they are supporting Scott. Of the remaining five legislators, four said they always remain neutral in party primary election. One is waiting until after the filing deadlines to make an endorsement.
“Vermont needs a governor who can restore the faith and trust in government that has been lost over the last six year and Phil Scott will be that leader,” said Representative Patti Lewis (R-Berlin).
Senator Dustin Degree (R-Franklin) said, “It’s time for a leader who will set clear priorities, who is truly in touch with Vermont’s working families and who will put the needs of Vermonters first. Phil Scott’s that leader. His perspective, ideas for making Vermont more affordable and our economy stronger, and his willingness to work together to build a consensus and implement solutions make him the best candidate for Governor.”
“I really appreciate that everything Phil does is informed by his conversations with every day Vermonters,” said Senator Peg Flory (R-Rutland) “He’s genuine and authentic. He does what he says he will do. Given the challenges we have faced in the last few years, it is time for Phil’s steady and trustworthy leadership at the helm of state government. That’s why I’m pleased to be supporting him.”
“As the only Republican elected to statewide office, Phil has shown determination and leadership in advocating for Vermonters and promoting policies that benefit Vermont families and the economy,” said Representative Kurt Wright (R-Burlington). “He has also shown that he can build a diverse and bipartisan coalition that is needed to win statewide elections. For all of these reasons, I’m delighted to be supporting Phil.”
Scott said he is honored to have the endorsement of his Republican colleagues, and respects the decisions of the four who always opt to remain neutral.
“It’s an honor to have the support of so many great public servants. As the minority party, we’ve all worked very closely to make Vermont stronger and more affordable,” Scott added. “It’s clear, however, that to restore faith and trust in government and reduce the barriers to job creation, we need a governor who will make growing our economy the top priority. That’s why I’m running for Governor.”
